General Map, 1/250,000 North West Europe Sheet 1, & part of 4.This combined sheet, covering the whole of the British front in late-1914 and early-1915, was produced early in the war from sheets of a new series, GSGS 2733, started just before the war and compiled from original French and Belgian material, to replace an earlier 1:380,160 scale ÔstrategicÕ map of Belgium & North-East France (GSGS 2517). Augmented by a simplified series GSGS 2738, it became the standard British ÔstrategicÕ map series for the duration of the war. 1:250,000 34 x 27

Sheet 28 & part of 20.This 1:40,000 scale combined sheet, based on Belgian originals revised throughout the war by the British, was part of a standard administrative and operations series GSGS 2743 used throughout the war. Layer-colouring, as in this sheet, was introduced onto some 1:40,000 and 1:100,000 sheets in 1915 to enable ground-forms to be more easily read; on this sheet it enables the high ground of the Passchendaele Ridge to be easily perceived. This example does not carry the normal Ôrevised system of squaringÕ used for location and referencing by the BEF on all large-scale maps. 1:40,000 35 x 31

The Somme Battlefield, 1916.This combined 1:40,000 sheet is particularly significant as it is the only one in the whole of the Western Front Official Histories to show the system of reference squaring used by the BEF during the First World War. This squaring was carried by all large-scale (1:5,000 to 1:40,000) sheets.It was not a true theatre grid, but was an arbitrary system of squaring, in yards, imposed on the metric sheetlines of the Belgian 1:40,000 series, used as standard by the British and extended over France. 1:40,000 37 x 40
